The new Indian Premier League (IPL) team, Sahara Pune Warriors owned by the Sahara India Parivar joins the fourth season of IPL 2011. The franchises of Pune and Kochi joined the 8 teams for the 2011 season of IPL in March 2010. Sahara Group was selected from three specified choices – Ahmedabad, Nagpur and Pune. The winning bid of $370 million for the Pune franchise was made by the Sahara Adventure Sports Limited which is in the short history of IPL. The head coach of Sahara Pune Warriors is previous Australian opener, Geoff Robert Marsh who is also remained as the coach of the Australian world cup winning side in 1999 while Dermot Reeve is the assistant coach of the team.

Subrata Roy of Sahara Group acquired the Pune IPL team at the 2010 franchise auction for two new Indian Premier League teams. The bid was lost by The Videocon Group for the Pune IPL Team and for Rs 1,702 crore Sahara group bought it on March 22, 2010. It was named as Sahara Pune Warriors at a function held at Pune on 24 April 2010. Sahara group declared its Pune IPL team name and revealed its logo at S.P. College ground in which Bollywood actress Urmila Matondkar and producer-director Mahesh Manjerekar began with a cultural programme. In the MCA Pune International Cricket Centre ground situated at Gahunje almost 25 km from Pune, the new IPL Team Sahara Pune Warriors will play their home matches.

Sahara Pune Warriors – new IPL team logo

Sahara Pune Warriors team logo is not like modern type but disclose the Indian Culture by sketch of Shivaji Maharaj, the hero of Marathi culture. The logo comprises a spike exerting cavalry-warrior on a horse, including a 'jiretop' on his head, with the name of team subsequent to it. The name of the team is written in the same tri color of the Indian Flag - orange, white and green colors.

Sahara Pune Warriors snapped up some excellent players in the Auction of the 2011 with their first buy Yuvraj Singh for a gigantic $1.8 million. They bought Karnataka’s stylish batsman Robin Uthappa as their wicket keeper for $2.1 million and South African captain Graeme Smith for $0.5 million that makes their team a very good combination of youth and experience in the team. The Pune franchise’s costliest player is Uthappa and they have added Angelo Mathews, Nathan McCullum and Callum Ferguson to have a powerful middle order.

Robin Uthappa

Full name: Robin Venu Uthappa

A son of an international hockey referee, Karnataka-born, Robin Uthappa made his One Day International debut in April 2006 in the seventh and final match of the English tour of India with 86 runs as an opening batsman previous to run out. Yuvraj Singh
